Robotic welding vision system

High precision and robust scientific equipment supporting research

Welding by robots offers manufacturers the prospect of significant productivity gains. The Geometric Modelling and Pattern Recognition Research Group (GMPR) at Sheffield Hallam University developed a cognitive welding robot vision system (MARWIN) using advanced fast 3D scanning to control and validate welding performed by robots.

Design Futures worked with GMPR to develop internal subassemblies, three-axis adjustment mechanisms, dampening systems and a robust enclosure. Protecting the optical and electronic technologies from exposure to vibration, heat and gases in what can be extremely harsh production environments improves reliability. The use of 3D printing, and a combination of stock parts and precision custom components delivered high quality at low volumes.
